Hi Adit, byebye.gif

Ur name sounds like u r frm India too. Back to ur question,

SOS Calls are some special no.s which u can always dial even if there is no balance in ur mobile or ur validity has expired. Like, some default no.s stored for SOS calls are 911 etc. which is no. of cops in America. In our Country, I've never used this feature. And I'm pretty much assured that it'll also not work here, as once Validity or cash balance gets exhausted, mobiles turned into a PAPERWEIGHT here.

Sometimes, even if ur cell is working fine, u'll enter in some conjested locations, basements, tall buildings, hospitals, army cantonment areas and highly secured places where there are Jammers installed. In any of the above conditions, ur mobile cannot receive the network, so, displays shows "SOS Calls Only".

For example, in my case, my workplace is installed with jammers, so, occasionaly, my mobile shows this signall.

Also, if the cell phone which u r using have some internal problem with the network reception, chances are there to get this msg very often.

Hope i've made the concept pretty clear. Bye.

I just want to clarify few things. I apologize for being ignorant.

SOS Calls Only appears due to the following reasons:
1. I don't have a prepaid account or balance?
2. There's no signal (perhaps because of my network).

Am I right?

Question
1. Can I send a message to the network to inquire about my balance? by the way, I'm using Sony Erickson T630. Unlike Nokia phones, I can send a message asking for my balance.

Depends on the agreement. I thought SOS was where the service providers had agreed for a customer on another network to use their network in an emergency an example maybe:

Orange sign and agreement with vodaphone where both agree to let the user make a call to an emergency service when the other's network is not avaliable. So you're ion orange but you get no reception due to being in a weak reception zone, however if you were on vodaphone you'd have a signal. You cannot make normal calls due to not having a reception from yours service provider but you can use vodaphone's network to make an emergency call which is free for everyone.

To make a balance enquiry i doubt you'll be able to do it (after all it is sos only not free calls only), as it probably costs money but your service provider pays for it. I maybe wrong, but i think it depends on the agreement between the companies whether free calls are allowed or only emergency calls.

Amending to what sameer madan said .... SOS calls means the emergency no which you can use if u r in trouble or something. U can still/also use the SOS call irrespective of you are having Sim card or not.

If you are having just a handset then you are on the positive side. This shows that the the SOS number is irrespective of subscriber service.

And even in India it is not a waste. generally the number is 112 but it automatically gets connected to the nearest control room under the area you are in.

For instance if you are in delhi and if u dial SOS no (112 mostly) it will automatically gets connected to the control room Delhi and if u r in kolkata then respectively it goes to kolkata contro; room irrespective of wheather you know the control room number or not.

So in India too its the mobiles are not a paper weight dear. It works same as it works in USA.
