Beleaguered electronics giant Sony is trying to stimulate sales of its flagship PlayStation 3 console with a slimmer, cheaper version that it hopes will appeal to hard-pressed buyers.

The Japanese company confirmed today that the new model will go on sale in the first week of September at the new price of £249 – a significant reduction from the current £299 retail price. Sony also said that it would be slashing the price of remaining full-size PlayStation 3 units, although it did not confirm how low the price would go.

The new slimline PS3 – which had been the subject of rumours for months – will be around a third smaller and lighter and consume less energy than its predecessor. It will also sport a 120GB hard drive, but will not be able to play old games from earlier console models.

You cant get it twisted. Its not that its outselling the ps3, its that it won't pass out like the competitors predecessors. And ps3 slim is golden although i cant lie. i luv the robust feel of the titanium phat ps3 XD

The new slim PS3 is good news for Sony, it costs less to manufacture and will sell as it's cheaper. Also good news for the consumer as it's cheaper and more energy efficient. IMO I'm keeping my original PS3 as it's still has the ability to install "another OS" so I could install Linux on it and use the awesome Cell processor power - that is the main reason why Sony brought this slim version out. So buyers will go out and get games. Unlike the old version where Universities and labs were buying bulk PS3's to use the Cell processor for research and build a super computer.
