Full Version: Featured file concerns

Okay, I have to agree with Sedma here. The featured files no longer works. Files are rarely added anymore, at least as far as SE themes go, I haven't watched other sections. Sedma said she has several files that should be candidates yet are not, as do I. I took a year off from themeing a while ago and went from Nokia themes to Sony. When I was making Nokia themes, the featured themes would be added weekly and cool themes that were new would be added that didn't yet qualify but an exception was rightfully made. Now that I'm making Sony themes a year later, things have really changed. I'm certainly not close to being the best themer but my skills have improved alot since I was making the Nokia themes. To date, I have made 257 Nokia themes, 32 of which are featured. After that, I have made 146 SE themes of which 3 are featured. Alot of the Nokia themes didn't meet the requirements but were still featured and now there are themes which meet the requirements and aren't featured. The featured themes are changed about once a month. I'm not complaining here, I just want some clarity. If this is supposed to be how it is now, I think some of the themers would like to know. Additional, fresh new featured themes each week was alot more fun.

Answer to that: No it should not. I have an idea which should make this issue better and i have also been sent ideas by members (please if you have any ideas about anything, feel free to send them to us).

It's just getting them implemented which takes so long as we have so much to do with only one person doing everything.

I don't really have any great ideas that someone else hasn't already said. Maybe there should be more than one person doing all this? Like more gallery mods and/or multiple mods per phone section? Or did you mean one person doing all this as is the site owner? Like I said, I'm not complaining but it didn't used to be like this. I'm not a mod so I don't know how things work on that end, they're probably tough as crap. Maybe there just needs to be more hands on the gallery end?

Well the previous way of files being featured was changed (however, this was a long time ago). Before if i remember correctly files were automatically featured when they got a certain number of downloads. This was removed after lots of themes with semi-naked women flooded the featured files. So it was changed to the new system where on certain criteria being reached it gets put in a validation list, mods then select which files they think are featured.

The thing is this list for themes is empty, i made sure of it this morning and only saw 1 or 2 themes from people i know. So the reason that themes are not being featured like they were used to must be something to do with how the code works and is not a lack of gallery mods.

Yes, what i meant by one person is only expert_21, the site owner, sees/edits any code on the site. It is a lot easier said then done getting more programmers working on code. A lot of trust is needed, then it's also hard to understand code someone else wrote, people tend to leave after a period of time and when this happens you need to find someone else and if a problem occurs which they dealt with in the past then it can create all sorts of messes.

Getting extra programmers is really all up to expert and the reasons i gave are not official reasons as i am just thinking on the spot.

I think that's the part right there. I went through my uploads and found 5 that meet the requirements and I think Sedma said the same thing. Ones that meet the requirements are even getting denied here upon request. It was just a nice incentive to keep creating better work but now featured themes are staying on top of each catagory for a month+ It just gets a little old to look at. Like I said, I'm not complaining, it's easier to just let it go and go back to theming. Thanks for taking the time to explain things.

Yeah, i think i have a solution that should make things better. However, it could be a while until it is implemented unfortunately. Whether it will work or if it is a good idea is a different question- but something needs to be done;

I agree we need to encourage and reward quality more thumbsup.gif

how do ratings (as seen on the bottom left of your post) work? who decides that? a year ago i was negative 2 and now im postive 2.

also, how come none of my stuff are featured downloads? quite of few of them meet the requirements. so why arent they featured?

just curious, i know others are too

PS if posted this in the wrong area, go ahead and move it. but could you notify me of that change. thanks

The rating system is the warning system. If you click the number underlined it'll explain why a rating is what it is smile.gif. 0 or nothing means neutral (neither good nor bad, it is this by default).

Featured files we are getting quite a few complaints as of late and i also think something needs to be done. How it currently works:

Once a file reaches a certain criteria it gets put in a list (file status changes to feature candidate). Mods then go through this list and feature the files they think are worthy.

The problem lies:

[*] Only the best of the best are to be featured, so therefore those that are very good but don't get featured status don't get recognition.

[*] Files don't seem to be entering this queue correctly.

However, mods can feature files on validating as well if they think the file is good enough.

If you feel you have some files you think should be featured but aren't then please see this thread:

I have merged some posts about featuring files into this topic so it is more organised and open to discussion. smile.gif

i understand that breaking rules, rates you down, but how did i earn those positive rating points?
vinnieza
Well in the past i have awarded positive points from:

Helping members in the forum on a consistent basis
Helping admins or mods out

To be honest we don't usually use it for positive any more because what we use that rating system for is to keep a log of what the user has done in the past, this helps us identify someone who for example keeps abusing members on more than one occasion. So we would use this to aid the decision if we should ban someone or not.

However, most good people we know who they are and they won't do anything bad usually anyway and if we did their reputation would probably just lead to a warning rather than a ban.

Don't worry i don't think you'd get banned and there is no real need to worry about it.

I think it does affect cp a little bit currently, however this will change in the new cp system because it isn't used much in a positive manor.

I saw that some new featured themes went up today, including a couple of mine!! Seriously, that's all the motivation I need once in a while to keep creating more and better stuff!!
And to vinnieza;
No one probably says it, but thank you! Your dedication here to this site is immeasurable. You're on most every thread contributing positively, keeping things in line. So, thank you!
vinnieza
You're welcome, but it did need doing (hope i didn't flood it out though) smile.gif

Just make sure you keep nudging me when something needs to be done. I'd loved it if there was someone that went through the gallery every week featuring the top files, i'd do it myself however am a bit busy at this point in time sad.gif.

My solution to that was to make this thread:

http://www.mobile9.com/invboard/index.php?showtopic=56015

I was hoping it was going to be a bit more popular and help me with getting some themes featured more often but without dedicating time. I have also asked the gallery mods to not forget to feature those very good themes.

Is all i can think of to do until we get a better system, maybe we should get a special gallery mod who's job it is, is to hunt and seek those very good files and feature them (wonders if i can get this set up if i can find someone wanting to do it).

Strange... I have 3 themes as featured candidates for whole month (or more) surrender.gif (and 5 that meet criterias but never get that status smile.gif)
vinnieza
@sedma, which are they? I will check into it for you smile.gif
