where are your softkeys and statusbar? It appears they are not in your image... which is why the white bg would be showing.

before you crop, make sure to layer>merge>visible when you have more than one layer.
remember to undo after you have merged them, to carry on editing the layers.

I dont understand what you need help for wacko.gif Specific your problem, as far as I am concerned, there is no softkeys, just plain bg

why not just make a 176*220 pic, then instead of cutting it copy it

goto view>new guide> 18px horizontal, and select the marquee tool, select fixed aspec ratio, type in 176 in the left box and 18 in the one next to it and from the top left corner make a selection, press ctrl+c, ctrl+n, name it status>ok, ctrl+v, then change the size to 176*176, and from the top left corner of the blue line drag and make a selection, press ctrl+c, ctrl+n, name it wall>ok, ctrl+v, then change the size of the marquee to 176*26 and from the bottom right hand corner make a selection upwards ctrl+c, ctrl+n, name it softkeys>ok, ctrl+v

Look at the box where it says Fethered 1px, it should be 0px.
That's why every fill you make while using the marquee tool looks blurred.
