Bumped into a rather amusing story by Michael Mace at Mobile Opportunity.

I was in an AT&T (formerly Cingular) mobile phone store. There was a big video display for the iPhone, but no phones on the counter. "Did they sell out?" I asked the clerk.

"Nope. Someone broke in and stole them," he said. "We saw it on the surveillance video. They were in and out in 30 seconds. They ran over to the iPhones, cut the cables, and left."

"Did they take anything else?" I asked, thinking I saw a new commercial in the making.

"Oh yeah, they took the Treos too."

Sorry, Apple. No commercial.

And sorry, RIM. They left the Blackberries. Personally, I would have grabbed a Pearl on the way out.

A new way to measure popularity of mobile phones indeed. wink.gif

But next time, that particular person might want to consider stealing another not so popular phone that can be easily unlocked. Apparently, iPhones are all serialized so Apple can permanently turn off the ones that were stolen. smile.gif

Good article indeed. But I am afraid that I have good news for thefts. wink.gif

It was the 08.08.2007 when the famous Croatian hacker, while he was bored (wacko.gif) broke the code of the new iPhone.

Although they say that they can do this...and they are not selling in in Europe, this young man has managed to crack iPhone, which was sent to him from his cousin from U.S.

It has been tested on T - mobile network here in Croatia, everything works except youtube (don't know why)

They also said that he was the first one in the world who managed to do that. Also you can find easy instructions how to do so. wacko.gif But if you don't know Croatian...well you will have to wait for some time until the instruction are translated on English.

P.S. If this is reading any Croatian, or any one who can read Croatian here is the article.

P.S. 2.
I have taken the liberty to translate the original article.

"Web site “Jabucnjak” (eng. Appleville) has some hot and exclusive news and this isn’t new iMac. iPhone is in Croatia and works!  Of course every unit purchased in USA on AT&T network would work in Croatia in roaming mode, but that would be news.

We can come to conclusion that enthusiast win again and where quicker than official solution. Just remember Intel Macs that run Windows before Apple released BootCamp. We hope that rest of us shouldn’t wait to long for Apple to release official version of iPhone that could be available in Croatia. But some problems might occur because activation of iPhone is done over iTunes Store, witch isn’t available in Croatia. We still hope that there would be another way to activate – some codes for Operators.

This iPhone unit (on pictures) is modded that can use T-mobile network like any other cell phone. Receiving calls, calling and SMS works normally. Of course, EDGE connection isn’t available everywhere so it connect to Internet over fast wireless connection where is available. Every Internet option of iPhone works with the exception of YouTube application.

On Internet you can find web pages that describe how to mod (“hack”), and “Jabucnjak” must warm that procedure isn’t simple and at end you loose warranty. On our knowledge modding is possible thought iPhone’s firmware, and with SIM cloning – witch can be describe like illegal operation witch can be realized. In every case this news confirm that iPhone can work in Croatia, and for rest of us is hope that we could purchase it in recent future here too.

Our pool shows that interest for iPhone is large – about 33% of users said that would purchased it no matter of terms and about 25% has voted that would buy it if price is reasonable. About 11% users of “Jabucnjak” is not interested in iPhone. "

Sven, thats not hacking, thats just decoding the phone to work on the other network.. tongue.gif smile.gif

I believe it is hacking, because he had to hack into the phone which was made to work inly in U.S ( for now) and adapt it to work here in Europe. So it wasn't branded or anything like that..similar to decoding but I believe it is not.

I thought the locking apple will do for stolen phones is different. It will totally disable the phone using the serial- like blocking the imei number? Instead of blocking it from a network

However, i don't know for certain without seeing the code or anything.

Even that code can probably be broken however being illegal and so?
