Hi guys, I'm seriuously thinking of buying a new phone (this old P900 has given its maximum, and it's way old..but still beats a fair number of phones available on the market)...

Anyways, till today, I was 100% sure I was going to buy a P990i (cool phone, has basicaly everything you can uild in a phone these days...)...but today a friend of mine suggested I buy a PDA Phone... He told me that Fujitsu-Siemens have good ones, and I browsed a little, and found one I'd like to buy - link (sorry, it's in croatian, but the main things are understandable...the specs)...

What bugs me the most is the price of both...

P990i - cheapest 5000 kn (croatian currency) = 685 €
HP iPAQ - 3699 kn = 506 €

Result - I would save 180 € if i bought the HP...

Now, does anyone have such a device (I know this is mainly a mobile forum), or did anyone switch from smartphone to a PDA?

The things I like te most about iPAQ is the GPS, Pocket Windows, Pocket Office, Media Player, big screen...and it still looks like a regular phone...

What are your ideas and suggestions?

OK, so I think a better choice would be Cingular 8525, so if anyone has it, or had the chance of working eith it, I would appreciate a few words about it...since it's not available in Croatia, I would probably order it, or buy one on ebay... But I need your opinions - P990i or HTC Cingular 8525?

What kind of specs are u looking for? What's the primary purpose for the phone?

I'm not a windows mobile user as if seems to crash a lot and has problems handling most task. I love SE phones in general. If you could wait for a while longer you might could get the iPhone. I'm getting 2 and selling 1 as my girlfriend doesn't need it.

Cingular 8525 Review

Here's the one I'm particularly interested in... Well, phone specs... I admit I'm of the trend-setter users, but I've used my P900's features 110%, everything was very useful, and I have a lot of additional programs for it...

I want a phone that is THE phone of all phones, that has all the latest technologies supported, and that looks good among friends, and especially business partners (in a year I'll probably be workng, so I need sth high class..)...

Friend of mine told me to get a PDA Phone, but all such devices are very large (compared to P990 which I wanted in the first place)...I've read a lot of reviews, and finnaly got to the Cingular 8525... I looked on ebay, and I could buy it for 400$... And it is a great phone, absolutely packed with all the modern technology... P990i is a dream, but so is his price...

I don't know, I'm 50-50 on both devices, but would probably get the Cingular...because of HSDPA, and Windows Mobile OS...

The 4GB iPhone will go out the door in the US as a Cingular exclusive for $499 on a two-year contract, 8GB for $599. Ships Stateside in June, Europe in fourth quarter, Asia in 2008

I had a treo 650 for about 3 months. I loved the features but had to trade in b/c of the size. I hate having it bulging out of my pocket. The p990 is very compact for what features it has and looks sleek. The 8525 is good looking but large. Do you have a 3g network/ will u use it/ have a data plan for it? Also think about the network setting for the phone. U might want to look on the internet to see if there are any MMS / Network setting for your provider as it will be setup for cingular. Sony seems to have better cameras than most phones. Are you going to use it as an mp3 player? (i know u will, ya got to, your the master of sound around here) the SE also has a radio.

Also if you want to check you emails on the go it might be easier with the 8525 (bigger screen and very long wifi range)
But the iPhone has the ability to view REAL web pages without compression. check Apple. That could be a major factor. But as of right now there are NO 3rd party apps for the iPhone.

We have HSDPA in Croatia, along with UMTS and EDGE..., but I'll probably be using UMTS and WiFi the most...

As for the camera, I intend to buy a digital camera in due time (for real photos, 10 Mpx to be exact), but the camer on the phone is just in case, and to be stylish..

Mp3 Player? Maybe... I have an mp3 player, an mp3 discman, a laptop, a car radio, dvd player... All of them reproduce mp3... So, basically, I rarely use my P900 for the music (although I have an 128 Mb memory card, and about 30 best of the best songs on it)...

Well, e-mailing is what my goal is, and it has a great keyboard...

As for the iPhone's REAL web pages... When I want to see REAL web pages, I bring my 15,4" laptop...

More I talk about it, the more I'm sure I'll go for the Cingular 8525... Maybe large, but so was my P800 when switching from a T630...wink.gif

I think that wold be your best choice. Good luck finding one at a great price. Let us know how it turns out for ya.

Well, it won't be tomorrow, but I believe that I'll get one in a couple of months... Well, June maybe...

Well I had PDA from T-mobile, and my father wanted it so bad that I gave it to him(ofcourse he had to buy me a new phone) anyway it has everything.... e-mail, normal internet...w-lan and all...
itchy11jr
if your waiting till june you might as well get the iphone. it does everything and more for about the same price
VanjaT630
I'm going for the Cingular 8525... When I earn enough money, and currently I have half the total cost (phone+delivery to Croatia+taxes) - and if I calculated correctly, the total price for a new and unlocked 8525 when delivered to my home would be about 600$... which is 350$ cheaper then a new P990i in Croatia... I do hope I'll get it by June... Well, by then maybe the price gets a little lowered...

I have a smartphone (not PDA) and it's probably the best OS I've used (I've had two of these, plus SE, siemens, motorola and nokia).

If you want advice on what smartphone/Pocket PC to get - take a look at www.coolsmartphone.com and www.modaco.com for the news on latest devices. There are some pretty good ones due out this year, depending on what you are after - if you are more inclined to go for the pocket PC rather than smartphone, I'd recommend taking a look at www.imate.com - for their new range of phones. Smartphones I'd go for the HTC Vox/Orange SPV E650 - similar design to the HTC Hermes you mention above (Cingular 8525), but smaller.

Personally, I'm waiting for the HTC S420 flip phone, but I'm not ruling out any of the ones I mention above smile.gif

since you were so in love with the p900, did you look into SE's new UIQ phones? M600, W950?
and i hope you looked into s60, because they are as productive as any smartphone

*btw, iphone is a turd. not unlockable, no 3rd party applications, built in battery, no 3g
VanjaT630
W950 - 4 Gb of flash memory...that's what definetly grabbed my attention, but no camera if I'm not mistaken... M600 is basically similar... Problem is, they have a fixed keypad, if it were flip like on a P990 (you can remove it on the P990) I would think about it...

That's why the 8525 is my favorite - a slide-down keypad... About new phones, well simon, basically every month sth better, more powerful etc. arrives on the market... If I would wait for sth ultimate, I would never buy anything...compromises must be made in such situations... and, I'd rather have a smartphone, than a Pocket PC - a phone is a phone, whatever it looks like, a Pocket PC will always be a pocket PC...no matter how similar today they are... but thanks on the advice guys...thumbsup.gif

i will buy PDA cuz i already used enough smart phones 10.gif
