Guess what, Apple gets a lawsuit from Cisco over the use of the name. Below is a picture of Cisco's iPhone.

user posted image

Apparently Cisco own the trademark for 11 years already, why can't Apple choose another name? blink.gif
adonisdemon
Typcial of Apple laugh.gif Wonder how many millions they will lose this time?
ArthurWill
Dunno how much they have to pay. But Apple should have expected this lawsuit. Free publicity for its product devil2.gif, even tho it hasn't pass the FCC approval.

Looks nice, specs aren't revolutionary and if it's due out here in Q3 when new phones will probs come out?

Storage is good though, like the w950. Had a doubt about the battery but 16 hours audio isn't bad.
EchoZulu
I'm going to try as hard as I can to NOT buy this phone when it's released in June... but I don't see that working out for me. smile.gif

Apple really did a great job on this one...
adonisdemon
Agreed, the only bad thing about the spec is the 2MP camera, everything else is pretty awesome.

Xmas 2007 is due date for Europe, just in time devil2.gif

Agree thumbsup.gif. Not sure what type of buyers Apple is aiming at. To me, the iPhone looks as if it perform nearly every task, but nothing stand out clearly.

No mention there of expandable memory, any ideas if it has any?
shoutout
going to wait and see if its themeable first love all new technology but if you cant make it your own its not up to date for me

probably will be revealed with the full specs. But do you need expandable memory if you have 4Gb as minimum?
luisleal
Yeah, 4Gb its good enough, my nokia 6280 has 1gb and i have lots of free space on it even with clips, ringtones, documents and all other stuff...

The phone looks nice anyway...

Steve Jobs revealed the other day that we wouldn't be able to install any 3rd party softwares on the iPhone. wacko.gif

The reason (Newsweek quotes Steve):
QUOTE
"You don’t want your phone to be an open platform....You need it to work when you need it to work. Cingular doesn't want to see their West Coast network go down because some application messed up."

Just like I don't quite understand the reason why we cannot change the battery for our Ipod easily (by opening the cover or example), I don't know why Apple wants to restrict their users.

Kinda expensive phone for me, and I don't like the idea of not being an open platform, it's if SE turns all their phones to be closed platform... that's non-sense, users want to CUSTOMIZE their phones or any high tech device. As for the name iPhone, I was watching CNN and on the note they said the name was used by several companies including Cisco, so they claim it is a free-non copyrighted name laugh.gif

Have to wait for soooooo long? wacko.gif
adonisdemon
For once Europe gets it before Asia tongue.gif
ArthurWill
bash.gif Why? Europe usually later? blink.gif
adonisdemon
I think Apple has decided that it won't be as big a hit in Asia, as most likely Asia has higher tech phones out already and may not be so successful.
baby_oink
i think its still good to have a k800 and an ipod. tongue.gif

Agree. Unless if the iPhone's battery life is so good that I wouldn't have to charge it twice every day.

My Ipod Nano needs to be recharged on a daily basis due to the fact that my Uni is very far away. If I don't, it will be out of battery half way thru the journey on the following day.

The same goes to my N80 due to heavy Wi-Fi usage. surrender.gif

iPhone's battery seems to be a let down, it's non removable and you will have to send to Apple to get it fixed if it breaks down.

Not sure I'd want the hassle of doing that.

Exactly. Sending it into Apple's service centre just to get the battery changed is wacko.gif

Typical Apple who would die to be different. They made the iPhone as closed platform when the rest are taking about personalization / tailor for one's need. smile.gif

Yeah, read about that too in Apple's statement.

QUOTE
The cell phone "contains the most sophisticated software ever shipped on a mobile device," Apple said. It added that the device had passed "several" of its required certification tests and would ship in "late June."

Personally, I don't mind if they release it late. Better to have it right. They wouldn't want to repeat the Microsoft glitch (Zune which is incompatible with Vista). tongue.gif

I agree. I will prob get one anyways just not sure if I want the first round version. Apple doesn't have a great record on launch Items. (like my mac book pro winning noise and EXTREME heat) I am thinking about the nokia N95 for now but I want to at lease talk to someone who owns it or really get to play with it myself and see how well it preforms.

Think of what YOU want from the phone. I personally "need" a good camera and a music player at hand. The N95 is ideal for me. The extra stuff is a great bonus. The handset isn't that big either, it's the same height as my K750 just a bit wider. Best of all it's a S60 device, and it's got loads of power behind it too.

Here is a good article talking about iPhone service charge from TUAW.

The rub with the iPhone isn't the price of the device itself, but rather the unknown price of the phone plan you'll be required to buy along with it. When I buy an iPod, it is mine free and clear. I don't need to pay a monthly service charge (which is signed in blood) to ensure that the darned thing will continue to function. That won't be the case with the iPhone. I'm almost certain that you will not be able to buy an 'unlocked' iPhone (that is an iPhone that you can use on any network, without having to buy a plan) for at least a year after its introduction.

'But how much could a phone plan cost?'

The truth is, we don't know yet. AT&T and Apple could be cooking up some special deal for iPhone buyers, but for the sake of argument let's just look at AT&T's current rates (as listed on Cingular.com) for the type of services that you would want on your iPhone to take advantage of all those super cool features. Here's the breakdown:
450 minutes talktime per month (includes 5000 nights and weekend minutes): $39.99
Smartphone Connect Unlimited (this is unlimited data transfer, since an internet communicator is sort of pointless with a data transfer cap): $19.99
Messenger Starter (200 text messages per month, unlimited texts to other AT&T customers): $9.99

That's a grand total of $69.97 in services for your iPhone before taxes (and that's kind of on the low end of the available services. I'm sure lots of people will want more talk time, or more text messages.). Now, let's assume that Apple and AT&T will only require that you sign up for a year (I'm betting the iPhone will require a 2 year contract), that translates to about $839.64 for the first year of services (before taxes once again). Tack on $500 for the iPhone itself and you find that Apple's cool new phone is going to cost you $1339.64 (roughly).

Nintendo to work with Apple for iPhone gaming?

Quote:
If you can’t beat them join them. With the iPhone days away from being launched Nintendo has apparently begun working with Apple, licensing a limited amount of content for the new phone. It was rumored a while back that Nintendo was planning on releasing a phone on their own, however this was scuttled shortly after the iPhone was first shown in January.

These exclusive games will be released on the iTunes Store at a $29.00 price point a few months after the iPhone launches. No word on whether Nintendo will be distributing iPod versions of these games. A major hangup in development has been the lack of buttons on the iPhone that was remedied by a touchscreen D-pad. One might wonder how Nintendo fans may see view playing on a phone without a traditional D-pad.

Sweet, glorious specs of the 11.6 millimeter device (that's frickin' thin, by the way) include a 3.5-inch 480 x 320 touchscreen display with multi-touch support and a proximity sensor to turn off the screen when it's close to your face, 2 megapixel cam, 4GB or 8 GB of storage, Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR and A2DP, WiFi that automatically engages when in range, and quad-band GSM radio with EDGE. Perhaps most amazingly, though, it somehow runs OS X with support for Widgets, Google Maps, and Safari, and iTunes (of course) with CoverFlow out of the gate. A partnership with Yahoo will allow all iPhone customers to hook up with free push IMAP email. Apple quotes 5 hours of battery life for talk or video, with a full 16 hours in music mode -- no word on standby time yet. In a twisted way, this is one rumor mill we're almost sad to see grind to a halt; after all, when is the next time we're going to have an opportunity to run this picture? The 4GB iPhone will go out the door in the US as a Cingular exclusive for $499 on a two-year contract, 8GB for $599. Ships Stateside in June, Europe in fourth quarter, Asia in 2008.

I love this phone and really wantED one but I will pass for now, here is everything I know about the iPhone, even the bad things that most people don't know and what turned me off to the iPhone:

What it has:
• Built-in iPod with Video playback
• Intelligent predictive typing
• Multi-touch interface (fast)
• Great scratch resistant screen (easily cleaned with your sleeve)
• Tilt sensors that lock the screen when up to your face, but unlocks it when you lower it to type numbers
• Screen that's visible in direct sunlight
• Software upgrades over time
• Decent voice quality
• Call and song control from its headphones
• Viewing Word, Excel and PDF documents
• Free live traffic in Google Maps
• Turn by turn directions that simulate a GPS (need to tell the phone when you're turning)
• Dedicated volume control and mute switch
• Microsoft Exchange support if your IT staff enables a setting on the server
• Push email via Yahoo Mail
• Syncing via Outlook calendar and contacts through iTunes (works even on Vista with the latest Outlook)
• Ability to play with other applications while you talk
• Good battery life
• A "real" browser
• Yahoo, Gmail, AOL, EarthLink, and various other email support
• Visual voicemail (support for rewinding, fast forwarding like a song)
• YouTube support
• Decent 2-megapixel camera
• It's thin
• Lots of eye candy
• Conference call with up to 5 people
• Built-in speakers if you don't want to use headphones
• Quicktime support in Safari
• Activating the phone requires iTunes and internet access
• A speakerphone

What it doesn't have:
• Support for all iPod accessories—doesn't support all car adapters for playing back, only charging
• An easy way to transfer phone numbers, via AT&T, from an existing phone
• Copy and paste support
• MP3/iTunes music ringtones
• Built-in game support
• Flash support anywhere (including browser)
• Instant Messaging
• Picture messaging (MMS)
• Video recording
• Voice recognition or voice dialing
• Wireless Bluetooth Stereo Streaming (A2DP support)
• One-size-fits-all headset jack (May have to buy an adapter for certain headphones)
• 3G (EV-DO/HSDPA)
• A hardware keyboard
• GPS
• Removable battery
• Expandable Storage
• Direct iTunes Music Store Access (Over Wi-Fi or EDGE)
• BlackBerry support
• Flash or zoom on the camera
• Windows Media support
• No easily removable sim card

Known Problems:
• Can get a little warm after use
• Battery will need to be replaced by Apple after 300-400 charges
• Levy had problems with one of his email accounts, due to his ISP blocking port 25. Apple's engineers "suggested a fix and said that this was something that would probably be addressed in an update."
• EDGE data is very slow
• AT&T's signal is lousy
• No hardware playback buttons (on the phone itself) make you go back to the iPod app to change songs or stop music
• Takes more taps to reach the phone interface than other smartphones
• Getting your contacts onto here from your old phone may be a hassle
• No real-time navigation
• The few web-app programs Mossberg tried weren't' impressive
• Camera is only good with ample light and no motion
• Only 200 text messages included on any calling plan
• Playing back music through an iPod dock may cause interference, so the iPhone "offered to switch to airplane mode". Doing so means you get no calls.

What we still don't know:
• How fingerprinty/face greasy it gets
• Whether Bluetooth file transfer works
• When and how often software updates (with new features) will appear

So I will just wait and see. Get rid of the 2 year contract (as mine is up and I don't want to be locked in), Not sure if I will ever get over the fact that you can't take the sim out. that just kills the phone, and add some ringtone support. Prob will never happen. good luck to all that get one
