Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is set to hold crunch talks with Maxi Rodriguez as he attempts to persuade theArgentine to remain at Anfield next season.
Rodriguez is reportedly on the verge of returning to his homeland with former club Newell's Old Boys ashe enters the final 12 months of his Liverpool contract. However, after taking over from Kenny Dalglish last month, Rodgers has made it known he hopes to be able to call upon Rodriguez next term. "I have known about Maxi for a long time. He is experienced, a very good player and he will understand 120 per centabout the way I want us to play," Rodgers told the Mirror. "I would like him to stay, but sometimes there are issues that surround that and I understand that - which is why I am speaking to him now. "But I would love to havehim here, I think he is a very good player. Whether it was starting or coming off the bench, he would be very good for our squad, because he understands what we want." Rodriguez made just 20 appearances for the Reds in all competitions last season, and while Rodgers says he understands the difficulties faced by the Argentina international, the Liverpool boss remains hopeful of resolving the issue in the near future. "He doesn't speak the language, it has been difficult for his family, so if a player like him wanted to leave, it wouldnot be because of the club. I have had a coupleof real good conversations with him. I know his thoughts and how he is thinking. "It was a difficult season for him and he probably felt he should have played a lot more. We willhopefully see where he is at over the next couple of weeks and finda solution," Rodgers said. |
