OK guys, I hope you like the topic I chose - admittedly I already had a song in mind that I really wanted to remix so I'm extra happy that I won! :)

I've been working on it all day today and I'm just about done...

@McKing

I'm really sorry that I didn't have a chance to answer your questions last week so this week so I took a couple of screenshots of the two main programs that I used for this week's challenge to show you. I don't want to clutter this topic up so after I post my finished files I'll post a new topic in the lounge with the screenshots and a few MP3s from my process. Also to answer one of the questions, no unfortunately the programs I use are payware. I'm not sure but with a little creativity you might be able to find them at a discount... ;)

OK, here's my entry for this week. :) It's a bit more mellow than previous entries in this challenge but I hope you guys like it! :good:

Marching Bands Of Manhattan by Death Cab For Cutie (excerpt of the part I used)

Marching Bands Of Manhattan (rmx)

-----------------------------

So instead of making another topic somewhere about the sw I use, I'll just post some info here and if anyone wants to know more just PM me and I'd be glad to discuss. I live for music so feel free to discuss anything you like!

(IMG:http://img147.imageshack.us/img147/4100/mbomliveqs6.th.png)

The screenshot above is of an application called Ableton Live 6. This is some amazing sw that can be used for many different things. In this case, I used the time streching/pitch shifting capabilities to increase the tempo of the source file (which in this case is the actual sample of the song I used). I also EQed it to bring out the vocals a bit. I also used Ableton Live to stretch out the word "sing". Then I cut it up and added some effects in the main song and you can hear it towards the end (0:22-0:26).

I also added an affect to the vocals called Auto-Tune to certain parts that causes the vocals to jump to certain pitches at certain times. I like the result. You may recognize this effect from some old songs like "Blue" by Eiffel 65 and "Believe" by Cher. This can be a HORRIBLE effect when it's overused (like in the two songs I mentioned) but if you don't overdo it, it's a nice 'digital' sounding effect.

This screenshot is of the completed project in the main sw I use - Cakewalk Sonar 5 Producer Edition. I use this app as my main sequencer and also for mixing (balancing audio levels, not like mixing records ;) ) and mastering when I have several songs going to one CD.

This screenshot shows all of the components of the song after I have already compiled them for the most part. The main drum loop (tracks 4 and 5) for example, was created in a separate Sonar project and once I liked the mix, I exported it to this project as one piece instead of cluttering it with all of the snares, kicks, cymbals, etc. Also, this made it much easier to pan back and forth as you can see by the red lines that go from side to side on top of the drum loop.

Another spot that I used a similar method is on the main tremelo melody that plays over the whole song. If you look at track 10 in the pic above, this was my source track. I cut pieces of the organ from the song's introduction and pasted them together (listen to the result here), then I added some heavy effects such as chorus, flange, and of course the tremelo effect that causes the sound to fade in and out in tempo with the song. Once i got it the way that I wanted it, I muted all of the other tracks and exported it - and then imported it back so that I could simply loop it on track 9. I separated the result here.

Also if you want, you can here the instrumental version of the song here.

OK, I hope I haven't bored you guys too much! Like I said if anyone has any questions feel free to ask or PM me. I am more than happy to give some tips or if you're having trouble finding a place to buy the software, let me know and I'd be glad to help you out. :)
