The tutorial below is to show you how to manually install BlackBerry themes with the newly release BlackBerry Desktop Software 6 which replaced the old Desktop Manager 5 from September 2010
The new software simplifies the process so I highly recommend an upgrade
Upgraded software is available for free from BlackBerry here: Blackberry Website
If you still want to use the old Desktop Manager then I recommend this tutorial: Click

Before you get started check on the following:

1. Make sure that the theme you want to install is intended for your phone model OS.

(Themes are added to the gallery according to screen resolution (example 320x240) and NOT according to the phone model and OS version.
Only a theme made for your model OS will work on your phone.
If you’re not sure ask the person who uploaded the theme.
Don’t try to install themes if you’re not sure – installing an incorrect theme will reduce your phones limited memory.)

Know your phone Operating System Version:
OS4 and OS5 will be listed under
Menu
Options
About

for OS6 and OS7 it will be listed under
Menu
Options
Device
About Device Versions

Example:

2. Check the zip folder that contains the theme. The folder will contain an ALX file for manual installation or a JAD file for Over The Air installation.

(a)If it contains a JAD file you should download or copy the zip folder directly to your phone memory card and you can follow this tutorial: Click

(b)If it contains an ALX file you need to install the theme manually using the Blackberry Desktop software.

Installing a theme with the new Desktop Software:

Connect your BlackBerry to your PC (via USB cable)

Launch the BlackBerry Desktop Software
Select the Applications menu (wait for the list of applications to load)
(IMG:http://i55.tinypic.com/11b8duw.jpg)

Click the Import files button.
Navigate to the folder you stored your theme file in, select it, and click Open.
(IMG:http://i42.tinypic.com/2a15oh.jpg)

Wait for the file to be imported.
(IMG:http://i52.tinypic.com/25ev9f9.jpg)

The theme (name) will now be displayed under Application Summary
and the Pending Action will show Install
Click on the Apply button to complete the installation
(IMG:http://i56.tinypic.com/2ch47r.jpg)

Wait for the installation to complete and your BlackBerry to reboot.
(IMG:http://i54.tinypic.com/f1in0l.jpg)

Now you can disconnect the phone from the PC.

Apply the theme ...
On your OS4 & OS5 BlackBerry go to:
Menu
Options
Theme
Selected the newly installed theme from the list
Exit and enjoy your Blackberry’s new look!

On your OS6 & OS7 BlackBerry go to:

The most likely reason is that you're trying to install a theme that's not for your phone model
I'm not even sure if there are themes available for your phone ...
the current BB theme builder only supports these models:
(IMG:http://i56.tinypic.com/fkshgw.jpg)
As you can see there is no option to make themes for the Curve 9300
I don't know if there's any "unofficial software" that can make themes for your model
